Corrections Policy
Getting it right matters more than getting it first. Here is how we handle errors, and how you can tell us about one.
ForTheFans is an independent US sports news site covering the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college sports, Formula 1, soccer, golf, tennis, UFC and 20+ more sports with breaking news, live scores, analysis and plain-English rules explainers for American fans.
Everyone makes mistakes. What matters is how quickly and openly they are fixed. ForTheFans corrects errors of fact promptly and transparently, as part of our editorial policy.
How to Report an Error
Email buildforthefans@gmail.com with the subject line Correction and include:
- The link to the article
- What you believe is wrong
- A source showing the correct information, if you have one
Every request is reviewed by an editor. You do not need to give your name.
How We Handle Corrections
- Review. An editor checks the report against primary sources such as official league statements, rulebooks and statistics.
- Fix. If we got something wrong, we correct the article as soon as the facts are confirmed.
- Disclose. Significant corrections are noted at the end of the article with the date and a short description of what changed.
- Learn. Recurring issues are reviewed so the same mistake does not happen again.
Corrections, Clarifications and Updates
- Correction: we got a fact wrong, such as a name, score, date, statistic or rule. The article is fixed and the correction is noted.
- Clarification: the facts were right but the wording could mislead. We rewrite it and add a note.
- Update: a developing story has new information. We add it and change the "Updated" date at the top of the article.
Minor fixes that do not change meaning, such as spelling, typos or formatting, are made without a note.
Headlines, Summaries and Social Posts
If a correction changes a headline or a fact that appeared in a social media post or newsletter, we correct the headline and, where practical, post the correction on the same channel.
Around the Web Stories
Our Around the Web pages summarize reporting from other outlets and name the original publisher. If the original outlet corrects its story, we update our summary to match. If you spot an error in our summary itself, report it the same way.
Unpublishing
We do not remove stories to hide mistakes. Articles are unpublished only in rare cases, such as a legal requirement or a serious safety risk to a person, and we note it when we do.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I report an error to ForTheFans?
Email buildforthefans@gmail.com with the subject line Correction. Include the article link, what you believe is wrong and, if possible, a source that shows the correct information.
Will ForTheFans delete a story instead of correcting it?
We correct stories rather than quietly removing them. We only unpublish an article in rare cases, such as a legal requirement or a serious safety concern, and we say so when we do.
What is the difference between a correction and an update?
A correction fixes something we got wrong. An update adds new information as a story develops. Corrections are noted on the article; updates change the Updated date.
