Dale Brown, the coach who turned LSU into a national basketball power and became one of the most colorful figures in college sports, has died at the age of 90.

An LSU Legend

Brown spent 25 seasons leading LSU's men's basketball program and won 448 games, the most of any coach in school history. He led the Tigers to two Final Four appearances and made LSU a regular presence on the national stage at a school long known first for football.

The Coach Behind Shaq

Brown's players included some of the most famous names in basketball history:

  • Shaquille O'Neal, the future Hall of Famer and four-time NBA champion, played for Brown at LSU before becoming the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.
  • Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, one of the most electric scorers in college basketball history, starred for the Tigers before a long NBA career.

A Larger-Than-Life Personality

Brown was known as much for his energy and outspoken personality as for his wins. He was a tireless promoter of the LSU program and of college basketball, never shy about speaking his mind.

A Week of Loss in Sports

Brown's death comes in a difficult week across sports. Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk revealed a Parkinson's diagnosis, and baseball mourned Todd Benzinger of the 1990 champion Reds. Read more in our college football preview.

His Legacy

College basketball will tip off a new season soon with Houston and UConn leading the early recruiting rankings and Duke impressing in exhibition play. Every one of those programs stands on the work of coaches like Brown, who helped grow the sport into what it is today.
