Point of Law, Once King Charles' Horse, Wins Melbourne Cup as Ryan Moore Sets Breeders' Cup Turf Record
A horse King Charles sold months earlier won Australia's biggest race, and Ryan Moore broke his own record in the Breeders' Cup Turf, a banner week for global racing.

Two of the sport's biggest prizes were decided within days of each other, and both produced history. Point of Law, a horse bred and once owned by King Charles III, won the 2026 Melbourne Cup, while Ryan Moore rode into the record books with a sixth Breeders' Cup Turf victory at Keeneland.
A King's Former Horse Wins at Flemington
Point of Law, a three-year-old son of Frankel, claimed the 166th Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday, November 3, ridden by Ethan Brown and trained by Ciaron Maher. The A$10 million race came just months after King Charles sold the colt, reportedly for more than £3 million, to an Australian syndicate that included former AFL star Chris Judd and part-owner Rupert Legh. The King had bred and raced Point of Law in Britain, where the horse was seen at Royal Ascot in June, before agreeing to the sale rather than keep a minority share.

Legh credited the King with sending the horse to Australia "in excellent condition." Point of Law arrived at Flemington off the back of a win in the Geelong Cup a fortnight earlier and had made only a handful of career starts, a profile so light that, per the official Melbourne Cup record books, only 2020 runner-up Tiger Moth had entered the race with fewer prior starts since 1993.
Maher Makes History With a Clean Sweep
Maher's result went beyond just the winner. His stable also saddled runner-up Zahrann (Ben Melham) and third-placed Juja Kibo (Sam Clipperton), giving him the first trainer trifecta in the Melbourne Cup's 166-year history. It was also Maher's second Melbourne Cup win. Joseph O'Brien's Sons and Lovers finished fourth, just outside the placings.

Ryan Moore Breaks His Own Breeders' Cup Turf Record
Three days earlier at Keeneland, Ryan Moore won the $5 million Breeders' Cup Turf aboard Benvenuto Cellini, trained by Aidan O'Brien, for a record sixth career win in the race. The colt came from well back in the field to seal it on October 31. Moore's previous Turf victories came on Conduit in 2008 and 2009, Magician in 2013, Found in 2015 and Auguste Rodin in 2023, meaning no other jockey has won the race more than three times. The result also gave O'Brien his 24th Breeders' Cup winner, extending his position among the meet's most successful trainers.

Why It Matters
Both results reinforce the same storylines that have defined the sport for years: the staying power of elite European-trained bloodstock on the world stage, and Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle operation's continued dominance of major turf racing on both sides of the Atlantic. For King Charles, watching a horse he bred and sold take Australia's most famous race from afar is a reminder that the royal silks don't have to be on a horse for the royal bloodline to matter. Racing fans in the UK, Ireland, the US and Australia all had reason to pay attention to the same weekend of results.
