Fortnite's Ultra-Rare 'Pirate Coin' Hunt Sparks Paid Carries, AFK Tools and a $10,000 eBay Listing

Fortnite's Treasure Hunters season added an ultra-rare drop players call the Pirate Coin, unlocking free item-shop cosmetics, and it has already created a booming, rule-breaking secondary market.

A single chest drop has turned into one of Fortnite's biggest community stories of the fall. Players have nicknamed it the Pirate Coin, officially called Pirate Shop Access, and the hunt for it has spawned paid carries, AFK farming bots and at least one eye-catching $10,000 eBay listing.

What the Pirate Coin Actually Does

Pirate Shop Access is an ultra-rare reward added as part of Fortnite's Treasure Hunters mini-season. Players who find it unlock the Pirate Shop, which opens two separate 14-day windows letting them claim eligible Item Shop cosmetics for free. Anything claimed during those windows stays permanently on the account. It doesn't cover everything in the shop, though: real-money bundles, gifted items and Battle Pass rewards are all excluded.

Just How Rare Is It?

Epic Games has not published an official drop rate, which has left the community to fill in the blanks. One widely repeated estimate puts the odds at around 1 in 700,000 chests opened, though that figure is unconfirmed. Other estimates, based on datamined information and community tracking of more than 1,500 opened chests, suggest the real odds may be closer to 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 20,000. Either way, reports suggest only a handful of players found it in the first day after it went live. One piece of good news for squads: if one member of a duo, trio or squad finds it, the rest of the group reportedly receives it too.

Exploits, Paid Carries and AFK Bots

The scarcity has fueled a wave of workarounds. Some players have shared tricks for destroying or triggering vault chests without a key, using in-game items like explosive cannonballs, Gum-Gum Fruit and shockwave grenades, though these only open more chests faster rather than improve the actual odds of a Pirate Shop drop. One viral clip touting a "broken strat" using shockwave grenades has racked up nearly a million views.

Beyond exploits, a real market has formed around the hunt. Some players are openly offering paid carries to help others find the item, while others are selling tools that claim, without proof, to boost the odds of a drop. Separately, at least one seller has advertised an automated AFK farming tool that reportedly runs matches in random squads while the user is away from their computer or asleep, with a download link circulated alongside the pitch.

The $10,000 Account Listing

Because Pirate Shop Access is tied permanently to the account that unlocks it rather than being a transferable item, it can't be traded directly. That hasn't stopped at least one seller from listing an entire account instead. A listing titled "Fortnite Pirate Shop Access Account OG season 2" is asking $10,000 or best offer on eBay, with the seller claiming the account holds more than 400 skins, including rare cosmetics like Black Knight, Omega, Royal Bomber, Neo Versa, Cobalt Snowfoot and the Merry Mint Axe, alongside an unused Pirate Shop Access reward.

Why It Matters

Account sales, cheating and promoting known exploits all violate Epic Games' Community Rules and can result in warnings, suspensions or permanent bans, but Epic has not publicly addressed the Pirate Coin market or said whether it plans to patch any of the reported methods. In the meantime, the chase for a single random chest drop has turned into a small, rule-bending economy of its own, a familiar pattern whenever a live-service game introduces a prize this scarce.
