In American sports, the worst team gets the first draft pick. In English soccer, the worst teams get kicked out of the league. That is promotion and relegation, and it is why a mid-table match in May can feel like a cup final. Here is how it works.

The English Soccer Pyramid

English soccer is organized as a pyramid of connected leagues. The top four professional divisions are:

  1. Premier League: 20 clubs
  2. Championship: 24 clubs
  3. League One: 24 clubs
  4. League Two: 24 clubs

Below them, the National League and regional leagues continue down to amateur level. In theory, a village club could climb all the way to the Premier League.

Relegation From the Premier League

At the end of each season, the clubs that finish 18th, 19th and 20th in the Premier League are relegated to the Championship. There are no exceptions, no matter how famous or wealthy the club.

The fight to avoid those spots is called the relegation battle, and it often produces the most dramatic final days of the season.

Promotion to the Premier League

Three clubs come up from the Championship each season:

  • 1st and 2nd place are promoted automatically.
  • 3rd to 6th place enter the Championship playoffs: two-legged semifinals, then a one-game final at Wembley Stadium.

Because promotion is worth so much in TV money, the Championship playoff final is often called the richest game in soccer.

How It Works Lower Down

The same principle continues through the pyramid, with promotion and relegation spots between every division, including playoffs in League One and League Two.

Parachute Payments

Dropping out of the Premier League means losing a large share of TV revenue. To soften the blow, relegated clubs receive parachute payments for a limited time. Critics argue these payments give relegated clubs an edge over the rest of the Championship.

Why American Leagues Do Not Do This

The NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and MLS are closed leagues. Teams are franchises, and owners pay for a guaranteed place in the league. Instead of relegation, they use drafts and salary caps to balance competition.

Promotion and relegation create a different kind of drama:

  • Every match matters, even for teams far from the title race.
  • Small clubs can dream: a team can rise through several divisions in a few years.
  • Big clubs can fall: famous names have dropped down the pyramid.

Is It Only in England?

No. Almost every soccer league in the world uses promotion and relegation, including Spain's La Liga, Germany's Bundesliga, Italy's Serie A and France's Ligue 1. Systems differ: some use playoffs between divisions, and the number of relegated teams varies.

Background from Wikipedia

Promotion and relegation

Promotion and relegation is used by sports leagues as a process where teams can move up and down among divisions in a league system, based on their performance over a season. Leagues that use promotion and relegation systems are sometimes called open leagues. In a system of promotion and relegation, the best-ranked team(s) in a lower division are promoted to a higher division for the next season, and the worst-ranked team(s) in the higher division are relegated to the lower division for the next season. During the season, teams that are high enough in the league table that they would qualify for promotion are sometimes said to be in the promotion zone, and those at the bottom are in the relegation zone (colloquially the drop zone or facing the drop).
