NFL Explained for British Fans: Downs, Scoring and the Season
No relegation, four downs to gain ten yards, and a season that ends with the Super Bowl. Here is the NFL explained for fans coming from football or rugby.

If your sporting diet has always been football on a Saturday and maybe rugby on a Sunday, the NFL can look like a completely different language: huddles, "fourth and one," a flag thrown for reasons nobody explains, and adverts every few minutes. Here is the version of American football explained with a British starting point.
The Basic Idea
Two teams of 11 try to move an oval ball into the opposing end zone. You can do that by running with the ball or throwing it forward (something rugby never allows), and you score more for reaching the end zone than you do for kicking it through the posts. That's genuinely most of it; everything else is detail.
Downs: The Four-Chance System
The concept with no real football or rugby equivalent is the down. The offense has four downs (attempts) to advance the ball 10 yards. Gain those 10 yards, and the clock resets to a fresh set of four downs. Fail across four attempts, and possession usually changes hands, often via a punt (a deliberate kick away) on fourth down if a team doesn't fancy the risk.

Think of it as a structured version of territory battles in rugby, except the "tackle count" resets to zero every time you cross a line, rather than running out after six plays like in rugby league.
Scoring
| Score | Points | Roughly like... |
|---|---|---|
| Touchdown | 6 | A try, but in a box at the end of the pitch |
| Extra point (kick) | 1 | A conversion |
| Two-point conversion | 2 | A riskier short conversion attempt from close range |
| Field goal | 3 | A penalty or drop goal |
| Safety | 2 | No direct football/rugby equivalent: tackling the attacking team in their own end zone |
The reason NFL scores so often land on multiples of 3 and 7 is this mix of 6-plus-1 touchdowns and 3-point field goals. For the full breakdown, see our NFL scoring explained guide.

Why the Clock Keeps Stopping
An NFL game is 60 minutes of game time, split into four 15-minute quarters, but broadcasts run close to three hours. The clock stops for incomplete passes, players going out of bounds, penalties, and commercial breaks, which is a jarring change if you are used to football's largely continuous 90 minutes or rugby's running 80.
The Season Structure
Each of the NFL's 32 teams plays 17 regular-season games across an 18-week schedule, with one bye (rest) week each. The season runs roughly September to January, after which 14 teams (7 from each conference) make the playoffs, a knockout bracket that ends with the Super Bowl in early February.
No Relegation, Ever
Coming from a football culture built entirely around promotion and relegation, this is the biggest structural shock: the NFL is a closed league. A team that finishes last does not drop down anywhere. Instead, poor results are rewarded with an earlier pick in the next college draft, the system the NFL uses to balance competition instead of a pyramid.

Why It's Growing in Britain
The NFL has played regular-season games in the UK every year since 2007, now split between Wembley Stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which was purpose-built with a retractable grass pitch covering a synthetic NFL field underneath. Sky Sports carries extensive live coverage through a dedicated NFL channel, and the NFL Academy, based at Loughborough, develops British teenagers toward US college scholarships. Combined with growing fantasy football and flag football participation in British schools, the sport's UK following keeps climbing year over year.
A Few Phrases Worth Knowing
- Blitz: sending extra defenders to rush the passer.
- Red zone: inside the opponent's 20-yard line, prime scoring territory.
- Hail Mary: a long, desperate pass thrown as time runs out.
- Pick-six: an interception returned for a touchdown.
Once the downs and scoring click, the rest is simply learning team names and storylines, same as any other sport. Frequently Asked Questions
What is a down in the NFL?
A down is one play. The offense gets four downs to advance the ball 10 yards; if they succeed, they earn a fresh set of four downs. Fail, and the ball usually changes possession.
How long is an NFL season?
Each team plays 17 regular-season games across an 18-week schedule, with one bye week, before 14 teams advance to the playoffs, which end with the Super Bowl.
Why does an NFL game take over three hours if it's only 60 minutes long?
The clock stops constantly, for incomplete passes, out-of-bounds plays, penalties and TV timeouts, which stretches 60 minutes of game time into a broadcast of around three hours.
Is there relegation in the NFL?
No. The NFL is a closed league of 32 franchises. The worst teams are rewarded with higher draft picks the following year instead of being relegated.
Why is the NFL getting more popular in the UK?
Regular-season games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Wembley since 2007, a dedicated Sky Sports NFL channel, and a UK-based NFL Academy developing British talent have all helped the sport's British audience grow steadily.
